Prepare One Photo for Multiple Exam Applications
Serious competitive exam aspirants don't apply for one exam. The prudent strategy is to apply for several in the same cycle — UPSC, SSC CGL, state PSC exams, banking exams — keeping multiple options open until results come through. Each application requires a photo. Each has slightly different specifications. The result, left unmanaged, is preparing a new photo for every form.
There's a simpler approach: identify the most restrictive specification across all your target exams and prepare a photo that satisfies all of them.
Finding the Common Spec
Most major Indian exam photos converge on: 3.5cm × 4.5cm, JPEG format, white background, face occupying approximately 70-80% of the frame, recent photograph. The differences are in file size limits, resolution requirements, and specific portal validation logic.
The universal safe spec: 200 DPI, 275 × 354 pixels, true white background, JPEG compressed to 40KB. This satisfies almost every major Indian exam portal's requirements simultaneously.
The File Size Strategy
File size is where exam specs diverge most. SSC requires under 50KB. Some banking exams allow up to 200KB. UPSC allows up to 300KB. The approach: prepare your source file at 40-50KB. A file at this size satisfies the strict SSC limit and is equally valid for portals with higher limits.
Preparing one 40KB file is more reliable than having different files for different exams and using the wrong one in a hurry. Simplicity reduces errors.
Keep the Original
Keep the original high-resolution photograph untouched and store it separately. Re-process to different spec each time from the original rather than re-processing an already-compressed file. This prevents quality degradation from repeated JPEG re-encoding and leaves you the flexibility to prepare different specifications from the same quality source if an exam requires something unusual.
